After thirteen years, Justice Barton Voigt retired from the Wyoming Supreme Court on January 3, 2014. Voigt is most well known for presiding over the murder trial of Aaron McKinney — one of two men convicted of killing gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard — as a lower court judge in 1999. Voigt has said he has no future political ambitions and is considering moving to Florida, citing his age, energy level, and health as reasons for his retirement. Voigt received his undergraduate, master’s, and J.D. degrees from the University of Wyoming. Voigt practiced law in his hometown of Thermopolis, Wyoming for ten years, serving two terms as a prosecutor for Hot Springs County. He later served two years as a Campbell County judge and eight years as a district court judge for the Eighth District Court. Voigt was appointed to the Wyoming Supreme Court in 2001 by former Governor Jim Geringer, and served as chief justice from 2006 to 2010. In the Matthew Shepard case, Voigt had dismissed the “homosexual rage” defense employed by McKinney’s attorneys in an attempt to have the charges against him reduced to manslaughter. McKinney was found guilty of felony murder and is currently serving two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. Voigt described the case as the most difficult that he’d presided over at that point, but that it was also the most rewarding.
