On May 31, 2014, Judge David M. Brockway retired from the Chemung County Family Court after 14 years on the bench. Before he became a judge, Brockway spent 25 years in public service. He served as an assistant public defender for Chemung County from 1975 to 1980, and served as a justice for Horseheads Village Court from 1980 to 2000. During his term on the court, Brockway oversaw mainly cases involving custody, family matters, child abuse, neglect and delinquency. “Out of the 25,000 cases, the happiest were the adoptions, where we found kids a permanent, safe home, and re-uniting kids with their natural parents,” Brockway stated. Brockway's retirement plans include writing and teaching about juvenile justice, traveling, and spending more time with his family.
