On October 1, 2013, Judge George C. Eskin retired from the Superior Court of Santa Barbara County after ten years on the bench.
Before he joined the court, Eskin practiced law with his wife, Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, a member of the California State Senate. He also previously served as the chief assistant city attorney for Los Angeles from 1976 to 1981 and as an assistant district attorney for Santa Barbara County from 1975 to 1976. Eskin was appointed to the court on August 26, 2013 by former Governor Gray Davis.[1][2]
As for his time spent on the bench, Eskin reflected: “I am proud to say, and don’t hesitate to say, I learned something new every day — about people, about the law, about the human condition, about different areas of occupation.” With regards to the criminal justice system, Eskin said he believes there should be a greater focus on treatment for drug offenses, stating: “I think there are far too many people sentenced to state prisons as a result of addictions that should be treated as soon as possible instead of prison as a first option."[2]
Outside of his judicial activities, Eskin has served as an announcer for the UC Santa Barbara women’s basketball games, DJ'd local radio shows, and acted as a mentor and judge for the California Mock Trial competitions. He hopes to continue pursuing these interests in his retirement and also spend more time with his family.[2]
