Spotlight
After twenty years on the bench, Judge Gayle Nachtigal has retired from the Washington County Circuit Court in Washington County, Oregon. Before serving on the court, Nachtigal worked in a private law practice with her husband and also served as a deputy district attorney for Washington County. She was appointed to the Washington County Circuit Court by former Governor Barbara Roberts in 1991. As for her judicial qualities, colleagues have described Nachtigal as a frank speaker who had no qualms about setting a person straight. Defendants in her court were at times subjected to her harsh comments, which Nachtigal hoped would sink in, remain in their minds, or at the very least make them mad enough to prove her wrong. Her directness came with a softer side as well and her work and public service as a judge reflected her empathy. When sentencing defendants in mental health court, Nachtigal would often allow them to work off their sentences in community service by working in local gardens. She could occasionally then be found working alongside them weeding and pruning. Her assistant, Annette Corning, further described Nachtigal as a judge with a tough exterior but who was also funny, compassionate, and extremely competent. Nachtigal, herself, acknowledged her aptitude as a judge, stating: "I don't tend to have a whole lot of trouble making decisions. And I like having the ultimate responsibility for it."
