For 24 years, Judge Donald Shelton served as a trial judge for the 22nd Circuit Court in Washtenaw County, Michigan. He retired from the bench on September 1, 2014, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70. Before he became a judge in 1970, Judge Shelton worked as an attorney in private practice, served as a staff attorney for the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps' 3rd Infantry Division in Germany, and was a council member, mayor pro tem, and then mayor for the City of Saline in Michigan. Judge Shelton has been described by his fellow judges, court employees, and county officials as a man who could tell a good story, got the job done, had a great sense of humor, and was dedicated to public service. One court employee stated: "He is the most amazing leader ever and I've worked for the court for 36 years. He's left his mark here and it's a positive one and we'll miss him." Though Judge Shelton has retired from the court, his next move is to work in the academic field, and teach as an associate professor and director for the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Criminal Justice Program. As for his own reflections of his 24-year service on the court, Judge Shelton added: “ I guess what I will miss about this is — every day when I come in here, this job is an intellectual and emotional challenge at the same time. There aren't many jobs like that, but that's the way it's supposed to be. ”
