Virginia: Retired Virginia Supreme Court Justice William Carrington Thompson passed away at 95 years old in his home at Chatham.[1]
In 1916, Thompson was born in Chatham. He graduated from the Hampden-Sydney College in 1935 and received his law degree from the University of Virginia Law School in 1938. That same year he was also admitted to the bar.[2]
In 1948, Thompson was the commonwealth's attorney for Pittsylvania County, as well as having served in the Virginia House and Senate.[2] In 1973, he was elected judge for the Virginia 22nd Judicial Circuit and in 1980, at the age of 64, he was elected to the Virginia State Supreme Court. Thompson filled the vacancy left by the then retiring justice Alex M. Harman Jr.[2]
Thompson retired in 1983 and is one of three retired members of the court to pass away this year.[2]
Thompson was the widower to his wife Margaret Colbert Thompson, to whom he was married for 65 years, and is survived by his sons, four grandchildren, as well as five great-grandchildren.[1]
He will be well-remembered by his colleagues for his almost photographic memory and his no-nonsense courtroom demeanor.[1]
