The Judicial Update

March 12, 2011

Oklahoma: On Thursday, March 3, retired Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Don Barnes passed away at age 86. Barnes began his 30 year career as an Oklahoma judge by being elected as an Okmulgee Oklahoma Superior Court judge in 1954. He was then appointed to the state Supreme Court in 1972 by former Governor David Hall. He served on the court until 1985, at which point he retired as chief justice. Barnes is remembered as "The Praying Judge," a nickname he earned after making it a habit to begin every court session with a prayer.[1]
