Burlison received his B.A. in political science and law enforcement from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University) in 1976 and his law degree from the Saint Louis University School of Law in 1979.[3][4]

Career

Prior to his legal career, Burlison served as an intern at Legal Services of Eastern Missouri from January to May of 1978. After graduating from law school, he joined the Law Office of George E. Sullivan in January of 1980. On August 16 of that year, he became a partner of the Carmichael and Burlison, Attorneys at Law. After serving in that position through 1985, he started his own Law Office of Rex M. Burlison in January of 1985. From September of 1989 to December 1994, he worked as a partner of Burlison and Farrell. He returned his own law firm until December of 1997, when he joined Burlison, Suddarth & Koor, L.L.C. as a partner. Then, from April of 1999 to March of 2000, he ran his own law firm once more.

Burlison was appointed an associate circuit judge of the 11th Judicial Circuit Court by Governor Carnahan in April of 2000. In January of the following year, he joined Attorney General Jay Nixon's Office as chief counsel for the Eastern District. He continued to serve under Nixon when the latter became governor. Burlison was on the governor's senior staff as director of the Eastern Region from February of 2009 until his judicial appointment in 2011.[4]

Noteworthy cases

Burlison allows invasion of privacy charge against Gov. Eric Greitens to go forward

On April 19, 2018, Judge Burlison declined to dismiss the criminal invasion of privacy charge against Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R). While he permitted the case to move forward, Burlison also criticized the prosecution, stating in court that he believed prosecutors had committed ethical violations based on their handling of evidence. In light of the prosecutors' actions, he said, he would allow Greitens' defense attorneys to depose some witnesses for a second time.[5]
