The two most important things to know about me are that I am a husband and father. My wife and I celebrated our 30th anniversary in May of this year. We are the parents of adult twins. Our daughter is a public school teacher and lives in District 1, while her twin brother lives in Portland, Oregon and works for a framing company.

I am currently representing District 1 on the Pima County Board of Supervisors and was first elected in 2020. Prior to serving in this role, I was a teacher in two local middle schools from 1991-2000. From 2000-2019, I was an assistant principal or principal in five local middle and high schools.

Although I have lived in Pima County for most of my adult life, I was raised in Athens, Ohio, and attended college there. I earned two degrees from Ohio University, one in political science and the other in education. While working towards my second degree, I was elected to Athens City Council, becoming the first student and the youngest person elected to serve in that role. I served nearly two full terms and resigned near the end of my second term to move to Pima County.

I am the vice-chair of the Board and also represent the county on both the Pima Association of Governments Regional Council and the Regional Transportation Authority Board. In addition, I am our representative to the Sun Corridor Board and the Legislative Policy Committee for the County Supervisors Association of Arizona (CSA). I also serve as one of CSA’s vice-presidents.
  • The essential role of local government is to ensure that all the services and supports our constituents depend upon are delivered equitably, in ways that are responsive to their needs and that demonstrate prudent use of the public revenues entrusted to us.
  • The most important attribute anyone entrusted with public office can demonstrate is selflessness. I try to be mindful of this essential trait with every decision I make and every vote I cast. Elected leaders should also strive to be communicative, visible and supportive.
  • Constituent service and outreach have been and will continue to be my highest priorities. My staff and I have held 16 public town halls, met with numerous community groups and put out a newsletter twice a month. We also strictly adhere to a policy of getting back to anyone who contacts us with a problem or concern within 24 hours.
Public health and safety, education, roads and transportation, economic development, affordable housing, environmental protection, land conservation, budgeting.
My late father was a kindhearted and dedicated parent and educator. He set an example for me in both those roles.
As I said in my response to a previous question, selflessness is the most important trait for anyone entrusted with leadership to demonstrate. It is also vital to be communicative, visible and supportive in your interactions with the people you represent. Demonstrating equanimity, especially during times of challenge and stress, is also crucial.
I have always worked in public service as either an educator or an elected leader. Working on behalf of the people and community I serve is both a distinct honor and a significant responsibility, so I approach public service with seriousness, humility and care. I work hard, ask questions, listen to what is shared with me and engage in dialogue with my peers, staff and constituents. I also try to admit when I’m wrong, or when I should change my mind based on the facts presented.
The Board of Supervisors is a policy making entity. We set policy that is then implemented by the almost 7,000 people who work for the county. The most important policy decisions we make are during the creation of the county budget, when we also set the tax rates for the four property taxes we assess. Each supervisor is also the voice of and the advocate for the people they represent in their district.
I would hope people would say I was a devoted husband and father, an educator who tried to do right by his students and an elected leader who was known for his common sense, commitment to service and for achieving results on behalf of the people he represented.
I was in fourth grade when the Vietnam War ended and remember the soldiers and POWs coming home.
Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. It impressed upon me the importance and joy of living a life devoted to service and selflessness.
