The Rhinelander school district referendum was on the September 9 in Oneida, Lincoln and Langlade counties. This was a $23.5 million dollar question that will go before voters on September 9th, 2008.[1] The referendum approved by the Rhinelander Board of Education in July of 2008. The referendum was previously defeated on April 1st, 2008. The previous referendum offered to voters a request to spend $32 million in debt obligations.[2] (dead link) The bond referendum was defeated by but saw overall support by voters in the city of Rhinelander.
Proposed use of the Rhinelander school bond issue
The proposed $23.5 million dollar referendum will allocate funds for:
- Athletic facilities and programs
- Roof repair
- Expanded classroom growth
Increase in property taxes
The school district administrator and board members claim that the $23.5 million dollar referendum will be "tax neutral" by filling a void of expiring debt during the 2009 school year. The average tax levy is approximately $11-18 per thousand dollars of fair market valuation. Residents in the city of Rhinelander pay an average of $17.83 per thousand dollars of valuation.[3] (dead link)

Support campaign group for the Rhinelander referendum was vote yes rhinelander.[4]
Opposition
Opposition to the referendum comes from taxpayers who claim that taxes are already too high and that there is too much focus on growing athletics when there is a significant decline in enrollment.
