Statements about ESG investing
- James Diossa (D), candidate for Rhode Island treasurer
- "It is long past time for us, as a State and as a Nation, to get serious about climate change. The science is real: our world is warming at an alarming rate. Indeed, the speed of global warming has consistently outpaced our predictions. And here in the Ocean State where so many people live by the coast or depend on the ocean for their livelihood, we will be among the first to experience the worst of its effects. As Treasurer, I intend to leverage state funding in order to encourage cities and towns to adopt zoning and land use laws that encourage sustainable energy infrastructure, ensure state-financed construction projects move forward with an eye toward sustainability, and expand funding for green construction projects through the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank."
- "As a state, and as a country, we have to end the scourge of gun violence in our communities. As your next General Treasurer, I will be responsible for overseeing the state pension’s investment portfolio. With a pension fund totaling nearly $11 billion, our state maintains investments in a diverse array of public companies. The state pension system owns thousands of shares in some of the world’s largest corporations. Effectively, this can make the state pension system a significant shareholder in such companies. I intend to leverage this influence, to hold companies responsible and evaluate ways in which such corporations can reduce engagement with and financial entanglement in the gun industry."[1]
- James Lathrop (R), candidate for Rhode Island treasurer
- "Diversity - The Treasurer’s office needs reflect our community. As Treasurer I will promote opportunities within the office for people of all ethnicities and orientations."
- "Equity - Often laws and credits provided by our legislation do not benefit all groups equally. As Treasurer I will establish and equity commission to report on equity of such programs."[2]
