Rhode Island may take a chance on gambling
April 21, 2010
PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island: The smallest state in the union has taken on a big issue, as lawmakers are contemplating placing a casino measure on the November 2, 2010 ballot. The measure, which two variations have appeared in both the House and Rhode Island State Senate, would allow for the operation of casino gambling in the state. The House version of the measure would allow casino gambling at the state's two slot venues, Twin River and Newport Grand. The Senate version would allow for a competitive bidding amongst communities and casino developers for licenses.[1]
Section 1 of Article 14 of the Rhode Island Constitution says that the Rhode Island General Assembly can initiate the process of amendment "by a roll call vote of a majority of the members elected to each house."
