|In 1994, I attended Tuskegee University, obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with an emphasis on the Social and Political Sciences, and Mathematics, and graduated Summa Cum Laude. I joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and served as VP of the Gamma Tau Chapter.
- Racial Inequality
I will combat racial inequality within the justice system through a multifaceted and systemic approach. I will advocate and contribute to policy changes by working closely with legal scholars, policymakers, and community leaders for the development and implementation of reforms that dismantle systemic biases.
I will impact educational initiatives by encouraging cultural competence training for legal professionals, law enforcement, and court staff. I will foster an environment that is attuned to the diverse backgrounds of individuals who come into contact with the legal system. I will support measures that address implicit biases, ensuring that all receive fair treatment, no matter what their racial or ethnic background. - Lower Recidivism l will play a pivotal role in breaking the cycle of repeat offenders by supporting the implementation of evidence-based programs that prioritize addressing the root causes of criminal behavior. I will help create a more rehabilitative and supportive environment by emphasizing individual treatment plans and alternative sentencing options tailored to the specific needs of defendants all while ensuring public safety. This would include promoting diversion programs, mental health interventions, and substance use treatment as viable alternatives to prison. I will contribute to a justice system that prioritizes second chances to reduce crime and increase public safety.
- Sentencing Reform I will promote and use evidence-based sentencing practices and will spearhead initiatives that prioritize fairness, equity, and rehabilitation. I will work with legal scholars, policymakers, and community stakeholders to address racial and socioeconomic disparities in sentencing. By actively engaging in conversations about systemic biases, implicit prejudices, and the disproportionate impact of the justice system on marginalized communities, I can be a catalyst for change. I will help reshape sentencing norms by using a more compassionate and equitable approach that aligns with the principles of justice and the well-being of the community at large.
