I am Rhonda Antoinette Haymon and I was born into this world determined. In the City of Bellflower, California, two weeks after my birth, I was diagnosed with pneumonia. I rallied my strength and fought for my life; one could say it was the first case I ever won. Fighting for life, both in a figurative and literal sense, has always been in my DNA. I was born to parents who hail from the southern most parts of Arkansas. Although I was born in the city, I am anchored by my southern heritage. My father, a United States Veteran of the Navy, taught me discipline and instilled within me the value of a strong work ethic. My parents’ marriage of 58 years has shown me the value of dedication and commitment. I am the youngest of three children and have been an advocate all of my life. While attending Gardena High school and graduating with high honors, I developed my advocacy skills through participation with the National Forensics’ League, now named the National Speech and Debate Association. I reached the highest level of achievement within the organization by winning impromptu-speaking competitions, a skillset that has enabled me to win cases throughout my career as a Deputy Public Defender.

In 1994, I attended Tuskegee University, obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with an emphasis on the Social and Political Sciences, and Mathematics, and graduated Summa Cum Laude. I joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and served as VP of the Gamma Tau Chapter.

  • Racial Inequality

I will combat racial inequality within the justice system through a multifaceted and systemic approach. I will advocate and contribute to policy changes by working closely with legal scholars, policymakers, and community leaders for the development and implementation of reforms that dismantle systemic biases.

I will impact educational initiatives by encouraging cultural competence training for legal professionals, law enforcement, and court staff. I will foster an environment that is attuned to the diverse backgrounds of individuals who come into contact with the legal system. I will support measures that address implicit biases, ensuring that all receive fair treatment, no matter what their racial or ethnic background.
  • Lower Recidivism l will play a pivotal role in breaking the cycle of repeat offenders by supporting the implementation of evidence-based programs that prioritize addressing the root causes of criminal behavior. I will help create a more rehabilitative and supportive environment by emphasizing individual treatment plans and alternative sentencing options tailored to the specific needs of defendants all while ensuring public safety. This would include promoting diversion programs, mental health interventions, and substance use treatment as viable alternatives to prison. I will contribute to a justice system that prioritizes second chances to reduce crime and increase public safety.
  • Sentencing Reform I will promote and use evidence-based sentencing practices and will spearhead initiatives that prioritize fairness, equity, and rehabilitation. I will work with legal scholars, policymakers, and community stakeholders to address racial and socioeconomic disparities in sentencing. By actively engaging in conversations about systemic biases, implicit prejudices, and the disproportionate impact of the justice system on marginalized communities, I can be a catalyst for change. I will help reshape sentencing norms by using a more compassionate and equitable approach that aligns with the principles of justice and the well-being of the community at large.
Criminal justice reform.

Mental health treatment.

Sentencing reforms.
Strong work ethic, integrity, excellent listener, compassionate, ethical, commitment to justice, fair, impartial, and transparent.
It is my experience over these 23 years of commitment to the law that has called me to the Judicial Bench. I have witnessed how the lack of transparency in the courtroom has generated unjust results. I have witnessed how the desire for personal gain has triumphed over justice. I have witnessed how the lack of a strong work ethic contributes to unjust results. My goal is to make sure that every person who walks into my courtroom has a voice and is treated fairly. Lady Liberty holds the scales of justice while blindfolded to ensure that fairness, transparency, and equity reign supreme. For this reason, judges are up for re-election. I have been born with the strength. I have mastered the law. I have developed a strong work ethic. As a public servant on the Judicial Bench, I will enforce both the spirit and letter of the law. It is my calling to be the Peoples Dream Judge.
