The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 20, 2014. John Cortes defeated incumbent Ricardo Rangel in the Democratic primary, while Carlos L. Irizarry, Sr. was unopposed in the Republican primary. Cortes defeated Irizarry in the general election.[7][8]
