Poirier ran in the 2012 election for Rhode Island State Senate District 22. He ran unopposed in the Republican primary on September 11. Stephen R. Archambault was unopposed in the Democratic primary. Incumbent John Tassoni (D) did not run for re-election. Poirier was defeated by Archambault in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[1]
