Richard Alarcon was a 2016 Democratic candidate who sought election to the U.S. House to represent the 29th Congressional District of California.[1]

Alarcon was a 2012 Democratic candidate for District 39 of the California State Assembly.

He was a member of the California State Senate from 1999 to 2006.[2] Alarcon was a member of the Los Angeles City Council from 1993 to 1998.[2]

Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Democratic. Incumbent Tony Cardenas (D) defeated Richard Alarcon (D) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Cardenas and Alarcon defeated Benito Bernal (D), David Guzman (D), and Joseph Shammas (D) in the top-two primary on June 7, 2016.[3][4][5]

Alarcon ran in the 2012 election for California State Assembly District 39. He advanced past the blanket primary on June 5, 2012, defeating Ricardo Benitez (R), Margie Margarita Carranza (R), Omar Cuevas (R), and John Paul Lindblad (G). Alarcon was defeated by Raul Bocanegra (D) in the general election on November 6, 2012.[6][7]

  • Middle Class Families: Richard is putting middle class families first. He led the fight for job creation, working to reopen the GM plant which created thousands of jobs right here in the valley. He continues to fight to end tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas and instead want to provide incentives to businesses that hire Californians.
  • Social Security: Richard strongly opposes cuts to Social Security and Medicare. And believes the top 2% need to pay their fair share in taxes. While in the state legislature Richard Alarcon chaired the labor committee and was successful in fighting for workers rights to safe, good paying jobs. Doubling workers unemployment benefits.
  • DREAM Act: Richard co-authored the DREAM Act which creates an immigration process for aspiring citizens, and also voted to allow aspiring citizens the ability to obtain a drivers license.
  • Environment: Richard strongly supports investment in green jobs. He cares about the health and safety of people in the San Fernando Valley, that’s why he closed the Lopez Canyon Landfill. Richard is also responsible for creating the first LEED certified building in Los Angeles County, this sustainable and environmentally friendly library has set the standard for future green projects. Richard pushed the MTA to upgrade it’s fleet with clean burning buses to cut down on toxic emissions.
  • Education: Richard cares about our childrens future. While in the State Senate he was able to secure 200 million dollars to recruit and train teachers. Richard wrote the legislation which guaranteed that every teacher who received their National Board Certification would receive a bonus. He insured that the bill would also provide opportunities for raises and benefits for teachers.
