Richard Battey
Richard Battey was a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota. Battey joined the court in 1985 after a nomination from President Ronald Reagan. He served as the court's chief judge from 1994 to 1998. He died serving on senior status on May 6, 2017.
Early life and education
A native of Aberdeen, South Dakota, Battey graduated from the University of South Dakota with both his bachelor's and J.D. degrees in 1950 and 1953 respectively.[1]
Military service
Battey served as a lieutenant in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955.[1]

Battey was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on September 27, 1985, to a seat vacated by Judge Andrew Bogue. Hearings on Battey's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on October 16, 1985, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on October 24, 1985. Battey was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on October 25, 1985, and he received his commission on October 28, 1985. Battey served as chief judge of the district court from 1994 to 1998. He elected to take senior status beginning on January 1, 1999. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Karen Schreier. Battey died serving on senior status on May 6, 2017.[1][2]
