My name is Richard Dana and I was born and raised in Northeast Ohio. I received the benefit of an excellent, and free, public school education before attending The Ohio State University. Working nights and weekends, I paid my own way through college, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics with University Honors. I then attended law school at Case Western Reserve University, and have served nearly 25 years as an advocate for making sure that the promises of America, Equal Justice Under Law, apply to all Americans who are willing to work hard in the pursuit of the American Dream.

My decision to run for elective office stems from the fear that the advantages I received from my schooling are not available to future generations. As part of my service to my Community, I have served on our local legal aid board, local mental health & recovery services board, local hospital board, and local school board. More recently, I began teaching at a regional campus of Kent State University. I have seen first hand how the current culture of corruption that exists in Columbus squanders Hundred of Millions of dollars from school funding, jeopardized our children's future. We must do better.

Finally, throughout my experiences, I have become an "Accidental Historian," where I have become inspired by the courage of the Citizens of Northeast Ohio throughout our history in taking the promises of America and seeing that they are available to all.
  • My first passion is about education, and seeing that our children's future is not based on the zip code where they reside. Ohio's school funding system was held to be Unconstitutional over 22 years ago. It's time to fix the way we fund Public Education in Ohio.
  • I have had the pleasure to serve on a major Northeast Ohio hospital board, serving as Board Chair of two regional hospitals that have earned 5 star ratings (out of 5 stars) from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for Quality and patient satisfaction. Like education, the quality of your healthcare should not be based on the zip code where you reside.
  • COVID-19 has revealed the struggles our most vulnerable populations face, especially in rural Ohio, and that includes a lack of Broadband Service. Our students and patients struggle without access to reliable and affordable Broadband.
In Northeast Ohio we were hit hard by the loss of manufacturing jobs in our area. We are in the middle of a renaissance, taking advantage of our strengths including a bustling tourist industry and new possibilities for growth. We are blessed with many things: wide open spaces along the shores of Lake Erie; scenic and wild rivers with un-matched hunting and fishing opportunities; beautiful covered bridges; world class wineries; historic locations related to the Underground Railroad and Women's Suffrage; and a burgeoning food scene made possible by our local farmers. We also live in close proximity to the absolute best healthcare systems in the World.

While our area has so much going for it, there are struggles that keep us from reaching our full potential. The loss of manufacturing to our area, resulted in the loss of many good paying Union jobs. The opioid crisis hit us hard, and COVID-19 reveals areas where children lack sufficient food with children and adults alike lacking basic healthcare. The lack of reliable and inexpensive Broadband will continue to negatively impact these populations that are not in a position to take advantage of our renaissance. The Country knew our area would lose jobs with NAFTA, and aid was promised, that was never delivered. Our next Representative must fight to restore full prosperity to this region, and I am prepared for that fight!

I look up to two heroes who served during the Korean War, my Father, Richard Dana, and Father-in-Law, Edward Sezon. Both of these men came out of that War as changed men, and both overcame adversity to lead successful lives and provide for their families.

My father served in the United States Air Force as a pilot flying B-29s left over from World War Two. It is reported that he and his crew served 30 combat missions in the final six months of the Korean War. My father came into the War as a young man full of vim and vigor, and left with scars related to losing friends in combat. My father was a very quiet man, who never discussed his Service in the military, but retained a "Mission Focus" in everything that he did for the remainder of his life including work and raising his Family. I credit my Father with teaching me persistence at getting a job done, and done right, while also taking time to Serve your Community.

My father-in-law never saw combat during the War, but this son of Slovenian Immigrants served his Country as a cook in the United States Army. Returning home after his service overseas, Eddie continued a business that he started in Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio called Eddie's Grill. For over 70 years, Eddie continues to Serve his Community as a long-standing businessman, often providing a young person with their first job. At the age of 88, Eddie continues to work at the Grill, and you would be hard-pressed to find a harder working person of any age than Eddie. He and his Family are proof that, through hard work and personal responsibility, the American Dream remains alive and well in our Nation.
My Political Philosophy is about Service. I am proud to come from an area of the World, Northeast Ohio, where our early settlors emphasized hard work and the need to prepare the next generation to continue the promises of America, Equal Justice Under Law, for all Citizens of our Great Nation. Our area produced leaders in the Underground Railroad; Women's Suffrage; and the more recent Civil Rights Movement. Indeed, my most recent research at Kent State University at Ashtabula concerns the role Ohio played in the Suffrage Movement, possibly holding the first Women's Suffrage Convention in 1846, two years before events at Seneca Falls.

If you want to know me, you can view two websites that I have played a part to develop at KSU-A honoring two individuals: Judge Florence E. Allen and Merle McCurdy.

I stand on the shoulders of giants.
I have the breadth of experience to face the challenges that Ohio will face in a post Covid-19 world. When our nation faced past financial difficulties, I served on the Board of the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland and other organizations to offer help to those facing foreclosure to receive free or reduced cost high-quality legal services. When I saw my local school struggling with finances, largely based on an unconstitutional funding system in Ohio that wastes hundred of millions of dollars to fund failed charter schools such as ECOT, I worker with teachers, parents, and our community to pass the first new operating levy in our District since 1993. When I saw our area hit with the opioid crisis, I joined our local Mental Health and Recovery Services Board. More recently, I am Board Chair of two regional hospitals rated in the top 10% of all hospitals in the nation for Quality and Patient Satisfaction measures.
Atticus Finch in Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird."

To this day, I remain firmly convinced in the promise of America and "Equal Justice Under Law."
I think it is important for our State Legislators to have a broad base of experience, and that can certainly include prior experience in government or politics. However, I think that it is equally if not more important for State Legislators to have practical business experience and additional Service to one's Community.

In addition to helping out my Family working in a seasonal restaurant, I have practiced law for nearly 25 years, as well as taught Criminal Justice, Business Law and Ethics at Kent State University at Ashtabula. I have also served on a number of charitable boards, including as President of the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland, my local Rotary Club, and as current Board Chair of two regional Hospitals within the University Hospitals Health System. I also serve on my local School Board.

I believe that everyone should have an opportunity to engage in Public Service, including work on a School Board. The interplay between local, state, and national government is quite fascinating. While politicians in Washington and Columbus, seemingly, can't get anything done, it takes the hard work at the local level to actually get the work of government done. I am embarrassed at the in-fighting that goes on in D.C., and outright distraught at the waste if not outright fraud that occurs in Columbus that negatively impacts the education our children receive. It is this culture of corruption that I see in Columbus, and the negative impact that it has on our children, that is the main reason for my run to Serve Ohio's 99th House District. That would not have occurred without my prior experiences in running successful businesses and seeing how decisions in Columbus and D.C. hurt our children and their futures.
Absolutely! You wouldn't drive your car completely off the left or right side of the roadway, you attempt to stay within your lane within the paved portion of the road. I believe that the same things exists with respect to our politics. To get the job done of government, there has to be individuals willing to cross the aisle to do the actual work of governing. For instance, on our local school board, we may have disagreements as to best approach to address an issue. However, our disagreements do not have to make us disagreeable. In the end, our School Board ultimately makes the decision that best helps and speaks for our constituents who do not have a voice, our children.

For far too long, largely based from gerrymandered districts, our National Parties fight from the far extremes off the roadway on the "left" or the "right." As a result, both parties play to their base without seeking compromise or real solutions to our Nation's problems.
Because of my experience, I think that I could add significant value to a number of Committees including the following: Agriculture and Natural Resources; Criminal Justice; Economic and Small Business Development; Judiciary and Ethics; Education; and Health and Aging.

That is a long list, but my focus will be on the single biggest industry in the 99th House District, Agriculture. Northeast Ohio is also blessed with the best healthcare in the World, so the Health and Aging Committee is of particular interest. I am also a public school kid, who had the privilege to attend the Ohio State University, with a willingness to serve on my local School Board and Kent State University Extension where I observe the very real problems that we have in this State with respect to Education. First and foremost, I want to make sure that the excellent Education my generation received from the State of Ohio, exists for future Generations of Ohioans.
