Richard Diaz (New Jersey)
Richard Diaz was an at-large member of the Passaic school board in New Jersey. He won re-election in a general election on April 23, 2014. He was first elected to the board in April 2008.
Biography
Richard Diaz is a resident of Passaic, New Jersey. Diaz graduated from Passaic High School in 1983 before serving in the United States Marine Corps.[1] After leaving the military, Diaz joined the Passaic Police Department as a police officer in 1987. In May 2011, he became the first Latino police chief in the history of Passaic County when Mayor Alex D. Blanco appointed him to the position.[2] After Diaz's retirement from the Passaic Police Department in February 2013, Mayor Blanco appointed him to the newly created position of public safety director on September 10, 2013.[3] He served in this position until he was placed on suspension in September 2016 amid allegations of harassment. No charges were brought against Diaz in the matter.[4]

Richard Diaz and fellow incumbents Kenia Flores and Horacio Carrera defeated challenger Rene L. Griggs to keep their at-large seats in the general election on April 23, 2014. The three incumbents created a joint candidates committee to run as a slate.
