Gallot announced on August 15, 2011 that he would be running for the newly redrawn District 29 state senate seat.[6] He defeated Tony Vets (R) and Mary Wardsworth (D) in the primary election on October 22, 2011. Because Louisiana uses a blanket primary system, a candidate can be declared the overall winner of the seat by garnering 50 percent +1 of the vote in the primary. Because Gallot received over 50 percent +1 of the vote on October 22, there was not a runoff election on November 19.[7]
