Richard Haik
Richard T. Haik, Sr. is a former federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana in Lake Charles, Louisiana (Calcasieu Parish). He joined the court in 1991 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. Haik was the chief judge of the court from 2002 to 2009. He assumed senior status on March 6, 2015, and retired on January 15, 2016.[1][2]
Haik is the brother of Suzanne Haik Terrell, who failed in a high-profile Republican bid for the U.S. Senate in 2002 and for Louisiana attorney general in 2003.[3][4]
Early life and education
A native of Louisiana, Haik graduated from the University of Southwest Louisiana with his bachelor's degree in 1971 and later graduated from Loyola University New Orleans School of Law with his Juris Doctor degree in 1975. Haik served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from 1971 to 1978 and served in the Army Reserve as a Captain from 1980 to 1984.[2]
Professional career
Haik served as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Louisiana from 1975 to 1984 then became a Louisiana state district judge from 1984 to 1991.[2]
Judicial career
Western District of Louisiana
Haik was nominated by President George H.W. Bush on April 11, 1991, to a seat vacated by John Duhe, Jr. as Duhe was elevated in the ranks of the Federal Judiciary as he received a nomination to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Haik was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 24, 1991, on a voice vote and received his commission on May 30, 1991. Haik served as Chief Judge of the Court from 2002 to 2009. He assumed senior status on March 6, 2015, and retired on January 15, 2016.[2]
