Richard Hammel was a Democratic member of the Michigan House of Representatives, representing District 48 from January 1, 2007 to January 1, 2013. He served as the State House Minority Leader.

Rep. Hammel earned a Bachelor of Applied Science-Industrial Technology from the University of Michigan-Flint. He graduated from Beecher High School in Mount Morris Township. Rep. Hammel and his wife, Debra, have four grown daughters: Alishea, Andrea, Karen and Jessica. They have four grandchildren: Kaydance, Maygen, Blake and Will.

Rep. Hammel was a Genesee County commissioner for nine years. He served as chair for seven years. He also served as a Mount Morris Township Trustee for four years.
