Candidate Connection

Dr. Richard Mendelson participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 11, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Dr. Richard Mendelson's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Safety

2) Accountability
3) Fair Pay for Teachers[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am incredibly passionate about education. I am a second-generation Broward County educator and I served as a classroom teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for 13 years. My main areas of concern are the safety of our schools, accountability of our elected officials and District Leadership, as well as the fact that Teachers, Para-Professionals, Security Personnel, and other Facilities Staff are not compensated fairly. I am also concerned that Broward County Public Schools is not providing adequate services to students with mental illness or disabilities.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Dr. Richard Mendelson answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Integrity, honesty, and a legitimate desire to do the work.[3]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
As an Industrial and Organizational Psychologist, I am trained and experienced with regard to fixing broken systems. It is my sincere belief that we do not have a single elected official with the experience or acumen in correcting organizational challenges that I possess.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
The core responsibilities of this office are to always serve the students first, remember our obligation to provide transparency and honesty in our dealings, and to provide stability of position and finances for our employees. School safety is paramount, followed by accountability of elected officials, and the fair compensation for teachers and other school personnel.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to exit Office knowing the Broward County Public School District has become an organization known for its integrity, its efficacy, its efficiency, and the wonderful achievements of the students we graduate.[3]
