Richard Pombo is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives and a lobbyist with Gavel Resources, based in Washington, D.C.[1]
During the period of transition between the Obama and Trump administrations, Pombo was reported to be in consideration for a high-level appointment in the Trump administration. Politico reported that Pombo was being considered for secretary of the interior.[2]
Career
Cattle and dairy ranch
Pombo grew up and still resides on his family's ranch in Tracy, California. The family raises dairy and beef cattle on the 500-acre ranch. According to the Los Angeles Times, "It was the government riding roughshod over the family's property rights, [Pombo] says, that spurred him to get involved in national politics." In 1994, the ranch was declared a corridor for the San Joaquin kit fox, an endangered species.[3]
Political career
Congressman
Pombo served as a member of Tracy's city council from 1991 to 1992. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992 as a Republican. He served in congress from 1993 to 2007, but lost his bid for reelection in 2006. He was also unsuccessful in his bid for the Republican nomination for congress in 2010.[4]
During his time in congress, Pombo served as the chair of the House Natural Resources Committee from 2003 to 2007.[5] In this capacity, he authored several pieces of legislation regarding environmental law, energy policy, Native American and Tribal issues, farm bills, transportation policy, and more.[6]

Along with chairing the Natural Resources Committee, Pombo also spent time on the Transportation Committee, the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee, the Agricultrual Committee, and the Resources Committee. He also co-chaired the Speaker's Task force on Affordable Natural Gas, chaired the Western Caucus, and co-founded the Portuguese-American Caucus.[6]
Author
Pombo co-authored the book This Land Is Our Land: How to End the War on Private Property with Joseph Farah. It was published by St. Martin's Press in 1996.[7]
Lobbyist
From 2012 to 2014 Pombo was a partner with Sellery Associates[8] With Sellery Associates, Pombo represented clients such as the Federal Wildland Fire Service Association, Financial Service Centers, and United Keetoowah Band/Cherokee Indians.[9]
Since 2014, Pombo has been a partner at Gavel Resources, where he has represented clients including the Tohono O'Odham Nation, the Healthcare Coalition for Emergency Preparedness, the Northern California Power Agency, Paradigm Pipeline, and others.[10]
