Richard Witt was a judge of the Twenty-Sixth Family Court Circuit in Putnam County, West Virginia. He was elected in 2014 to complete the term of William M. Watkins[1]

Witt won election to a full term in the general election on May 10, 2016.[2]

Education

Witt received his undergraduate degree from West Virginia State University, and his J.D. from West Virginia University College of Law in 1997.[3]

Career

At the time of his judicial election in 2014, Witt was a sole practitioner.[3]

West Virginia held general elections for county judicial offices on May 10, 2016. This date coincided with partisan primaries for statewide and federal offices. The 2016 election was the first nonpartisan election for the state's judicial seats since statehood in 1863. Learn more about this change here. Candidates interested in filing for the election submitted paperwork by January 30, 2016. Incumbent Richard Witt ran unopposed in the general election for the West Virginia Family Court Circuit 26 seat.[2]

Judges of the West Virginia Family Courts are each elected to six- and eight-year terms. Their initial term is six years and every subsequent term is eight years.[4] The elections for this court are nonpartisan contested elections. To serve on this court, a judge must be a state citizen, a circuit resident, at least 30 years of age and have five years of law practice in the state.[5]

Primary: He was successful in the Republican primary on May 13, 2014, receiving 55.9 percent of the vote. He competed against Deloris Nibert.
General: He defeated David L. Hill in the general election on November 4, 2014, receiving 69.6 percent of the vote. [6][7]
