Richie Floyd is a science teacher, community activist, and engineer with experience leading organizing campaigns for the $15 minimum wage, criminal justice reform, and more. He is an active union member and has fought alongside his coworkers and other unions to demand better conditions for working people.
  • Housing for people of all incomes
  • Protecting our environment and natural resources
  • Better jobs and wages for our city
I strongly believe that building a better world for everyone means building a more just economy. Wealth created in the city needs to go to the working people that helped create it. Housing, jobs, and justice are core to ensuring everyone can thrive.
The City Council sets budget priorities for our city. A city budget sets forward the values that a city represents, i.e. does a city believe in supporting it's residents thorough investments in their well being, or does it spend its money on tax giveaways to the wealthy and the carceral system? In addition, the city council passes ordinances and laws in the city that creates a legal framework for how the local government affects the lives of the city's residents.
I have many political influences, like Jamaal Bowman, AOC, Bernie Sanders and more, but most important to me is being inspired by the working people that drive the progress in our world. People like my parents that get up everyday and go to work to provide a better future for their families and the world they live in.
As a public school teacher and organizer, I have seen first-hand the struggle that working families in our city face, and I’ve organized with our community to change things for the better. I believe that change occurs when everyday people stand together, so I have worked towards this on various issues, most recently as leader in the coalition that fought and won $15 per hour in our state.
The city has tremendous power to affect the working conditions of its residents. I intend to use this power to create an environment more favorable to working people.
What's most important in City Council is involvement in the local community that candidates are seeking to serve.
