Rick Perry announces bid for presidency
June 4, 2015
By Emily Aubert
Former Governor of Texas Rick Perry (R) announced his bid for the presidency today. Before speaking in front of a crowd of supporters in Addison, Texas, Perry released a video on his campaign website, saying, "We need a president who has done the right thing. We need a president who bridges the partisan divide rather than widen, who brings people together. We must do right and risk the consequences."[1][2]
Perry ran in the Republican presidential primary in 2012. Prior to acting as the longest-serving governor of Texas, from 2000 to 2015, and lieutenant governor of Texas from 1999 to 2000, Perry was the Texas agriculture commissioner from 1991 to 1999. Perry was also elected to the Texas House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1984 and served there from 1985 to 1991. Perry is a United States Air Force veteran.[3]
