Rick Sims

Richard M. Sims, III was a judge on the Third District of the California Courts of Appeal. He took his oath of office on December 29, 1982, after his appointment by former Governor Brown. He was retained by voters in the November 5, 2002 and January 6, 2003 elections.[1] He stepped down from the court in 2010.[2]

Education

Rick Sims was born on December 3, 1943 in Oakland, California. He graduated from Amherst College in 1965 and went on to receive his law degree from Harvard in 1968. He is married and has children.[3]

Career

Rick Sims worked as a VISTA Volunteer attorney from 1968 to 1970. After this, he was the Assistant Executive Director of the San Francisco Committee on Crime. Then, in 1972, he worked as the General Counsel for the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department. In 1973, he worked as part of the law firm Thelen, Marrin, Johnson & Bridges. During this time, from 1972 to 1975, he was an adjunct professor of law at the University of San Francisco. He was appointed to the Placer County Superior Court in 1980 and he worked here until his appointment to the Court of Appeals.[3]
