Ricky Junquera is a Regional Press Secretary for Sierra Club, and Vice Chair of the Miami Dade Democratic Party. He is also a proud Cuban American son and community activist. Throughout his career, Ricky has worked tirelessly to improve the community in which he was born. He is running for better health outcomes for his mother, and better economic outcomes for his working class community. Ricky considers himself blessed to have been raised in Southwest Miami-Dade and be running to represent the people he has spent his whole life looking up to. He often says, "we are our parents' American Dream, but the American Dream is getting harder to achieve. That needs to change."
  • "My mother and grandmother reminded me daily of the importance of improving myself and my community. I carry this with me today."
  • "We are our parents' American Dream, but the American Dream is getting harder to achieve. That needs to change."
  • Ricky considers himself blessed to have been raised in Southwest Miami-Dade and to be running to represent the community that means so much to him.
Healthcare|No Floridian should be crushed by costly medical expenses. That is why we need to make critical investments in healthcare so that people can afford to live in our community without worrying about paying their medical bills.||Jobs|Small businesses are the cornerstone of all of our local communities, and we need to find ways to invest in growing small businesses to allow for innovation and entrepreneurship. We must fix our unemployment system so that it is not set up to fail and improve paid leave laws. We can find ways to keep taxes low, while also caring for our whole economy.||Gun Violence|Floridians without a criminal or mental health history should be able to own a gun. That right is protected by the 2nd Amendment. But people across Florida are dying of gun violence, and we need to keep our communities safe. That means passing common-sense reforms like universal background checks for guns and ammunition, an assault weapons ban, and an end to the gun show loophole.||Clean Water|We must take up the challenges of our water quality issues, from wastewater management to Everglades restoration, to ensure all Floridians have access to clean drinking water.||Public Schools|For too long Florida's public schools have been overlooked and underfunded, diverting resources to charter schools. Our public school teachers and support staff deserve wage increases. It's time to help struggling schools, give teachers the raise they deserve, and invest in school safety.
I was a Sophomore in high school, in my biology class when someone ran through the classroom door telling our teacher to turn on the news, any news channel. We watched an already chaotic scene as one of the two Twin Towers was emitting smoke from its center. We watched in horror as a second plane made contact with the second tower and the rest of our lives was severely impacted since then.
My first job was as a receptionist assistant at my high school's night school program. I would end school at 2:30pm and would clock in at 3pm and work until 9 or 10 pm on school days and Saturday mornings. I am the middle of three kids within a year of each other and was raised by an amazing grandmother and single mom. We didn't have much, and that job provided me with enough to enjoy high school events and payed for college applications and the SAT. I worked in that office my Junior and Senior year of high school, and was Student Body President my Senior year as well.
We need non-partisan, independent redistricting that ends map manipulation.
