Three seats on the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees were up for general election on November 4, 2014. Places 3, 6 and 7 were on the ballot. All three incumbents did not file for re-election.

Norberto Cantu Jr. and Eddie Ramirez were both re-elected without opposition in Places 3 and 7, respectively. Judy A. Solis and Flor Flores faced off for the Place 6 seat, which Solis won.

Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District is located in Starr County, Texas. The county seat of Starr County is Rio Grande City. Starr County is home to 60,968 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] In the 2011-2012 school year, Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District was the 96th-largest school district in Texas and served 10,839 students.[2]

Demographics

Starr County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 8.5 percent of Starr County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.3 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income in Starr County was $24,653 compared to $51,563 for the state of Texas. The poverty rate in Starr County was 39.9 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Rio Grande City Consolidated ISD Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected to four-year terms, and serve the district at-large. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014.[4]

Candidates began filing nominating petitions on July 19, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was August 18, 2014.[5]
