Four of the seven seats on the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. Leticia Lopez defeated fellow newcomer Lorenza Martinez in the Place 1 race. Place 2 incumbent Noe Gonzalez lost to Eleazar Velasquez. Basilio Villarreal was defeated by Daria Babineaux in the race for the Place 4 seat. Place 4 incumbent Daniel Garcia defeated fellow board member Ruben Klein for the Place 5 seat. Garcia opted to run against Klein rather than seek re-election to the Place 4 seat.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees consists of seven at-large members elected to four-year terms. The filing period for Texas school board candidates running in fall elections started on July 23, 2016. The final day for candidates to file their applications for ballot placement was August 22, 2016. A candidate for school board in Texas must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the school district. The application for ballot placement also states that candidates cannot have felony convictions or court judgments verifying total mental incapacity on their records.[2]

The deadline to register to vote for the November election was October 11, 2016. The early voting period started on October 24, 2016, and concluded on November 4, 2016.[3]

Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District is located in Starr County, Texas. The county seat is Rio Grande City. Starr County was home to 63,795 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the 100th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 10,910 students.[7]

Demographics

Starr County underperformed in comparison to the state of Texas in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014.
