I've lived and worked in northern MN my entire life. I grew up in Big Falls and attended K-12 school at Littlefork-Big Falls. My dad was elementary principal and my mom worked for Boise Cascade. My husband and I raised our family and owned the A&W Restaurant in Bemidji. I earned degrees in Geography and Education at Bemidji State University and had a career as a community planner. I recently retired as NW Regional Director at MN DNR. I was elected to city council in 2010 and elected mayor in 2014. As mayor of Bemidji for eight years, I've learned that getting things done means working together. I bring an experienced, commonsense voice to the issues. I promise that as your Senator, I'll use my experience as a former business owner, community leader, and mayor to be an independent voice for SD5. I will continue to do what I do best - show up, work hard, and reach across the aisle to find solutions.
  • Jobs and economic development. Together we can build a healthy economy that works for everyone: workers, businesses, and communities. Northern Minnesota businesses need a trained workforce and broadband access to be successful.
  • Expand health care access and lower Rx drug costs. Everyone should have access to the care and medication they need for themselves and their families.
  • Fully fund public schools. Our children deserve fully funded schools that create opportunities for them to reach their full potential.
I care about our children and value pubic education. As the daughter of an educator, I know how important school funding is. Our schools are the heart and soul of our communities. Unfortunately, many of our schools in Senate District 5 are at a funding disadvantage. They depend on their communities to pass referenda to fund basic needs. Our teachers are often asked to do more for less pay than teachers in other parts of the state. Eliminating school funding disparities is a priority for me.

I will work to make sure that the state fully funds schools to reduce local property taxpayers' share. With more equitable investments in schools, we can address income and minority disparities to make sure all children have highly qualified teachers, safe classrooms, healthy meals, and support staff to help keep students on track and learning.
Having prior experience as an elected official is beneficial to help one understand the role and expectations of elected office. People who have held office have experience running meetings, finding consensus, working with constituents, and making difficult decisions. It is good preparation for serving in the legislature.
I am concerned about the challenges that we are leaving to our children and grandchildren. Climate change threatens the places we know and love, and for some, threatens livelihoods. We need to transition to a clean energy future. That means replacing fossil fuels with solar, wind, and renewable resources like biomass. In Minnesota, we have a unique opportunity to use woody biomass as a renewable fuel. We need to work together with our power companies to find the best strategies and innovations to make the biggest impact.
The relationship is best when it is open, transparent, and respectful. Doing good work and making laws that are fair and equitable requires bringing good ideas forward and finding consensus. Working in a collaborative manner gives Minnesota the best opportunity to build a state that works for everyone.
Yes. Developing good relationships is essential if we expect to work with our colleagues. Working together is the only way to find consensus and be successful .
To assure that redistricting is fair and impartial, I support establishment of a nonpartisan independent redistricting commission, that is representative of Minnesota's diversity, partisan balance, and geography.
