Three seats on the Roanoke County Public Schools School Board were up for general election on November 3, 2015. The seats of Catawba District incumbent David Wymer and Cave Spring District incumbent H. Odell Minnix were up for election. The Vinton District seat was up for special election due to the resignation of former board member Mike Stovall.[1][2]

Newcomers Donald Butzer and Tom McCracken III faced off for the Catawba District seat, while T.J. Lange and Michael Wray competed for the Cave Spring District seat. McCracken and Wray won their respective races. Tim Greenway won election to the Vinton District seat without opposition.[3]

This county was home to 93,524 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[4] In the 2011-2012 school year, Roanoke County Public Schools was the 17th-largest school district in Virginia and served 14,454 students.[5]

Demographics

Roanoke County outperformed the rest of Virginia in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 33.1 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 35.2 percent for Virginia as a whole. The median household income in Roanoke County was $60,795, compared to $63,907 for the state of Virginia. The poverty rate was 6.6 percent, compared to 11.3 percent for the entire state.[4]

Voter and candidate information

The Roanoke County School Board is a five-member board elected by district to staggered four-year terms. Seats in Catawba, Cave Spring and Vinton Districts were on the ballot in 2015. The general election was held on November 3, 2015. The next scheduled election for seats in Vinton, Windsor Hills and Hollins Districts was November 2017. The filing deadline for candidates interested in running for the board was June 9, 2015.[7][8]

Endorsements

The Roanoke County Education Association endorsed Donald Butzer and Michael Wray.[9] Butzer also received the endorsement of the Roanoke County Democratic Committee.[10]
