Two seats on the Roanoke County Public Schools school board were up for special election on November 8, 2016, for two unexpired terms. Incumbents Jason Moretz and Donald Butzer ran for re-election in the Windsor Hills District and the Catawba District, respectively. Butzer, who was appointed to his seat in July 2016, defeated Beverly Orange and Tom Sova IV to win another term on the board. Moretz was appointed to his seat in September 2015 and won re-election unopposed.[1][2][3]

The Roanoke County School Board consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Elections are held by district on a staggered basis in November of every odd-numbered year. If necessary, a special election can be held in even-numbered years. Three seats were up for general election on November 3, 2015, and two seats were up for special election on November 8, 2016.[4]

To run in the 2016 special election, school board candidates had to file by August 19, 2016.[5]

The Roanoke County school district is located in central Virginia in Roanoke County. This county was home to an estimated 94,409 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the 17th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 14,384 students.[7]
