Candidate Connection

Rob Hodgkinson participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on September 25, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Rob Hodgkinson's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Work to increase voter registration, voter participation and work to increase the number of candidates across all parties and independents.

Update the KSSoS website to make user friendly. **mobile friendly, better navigation and done in plain language not the cut and paste rules & regulations way it is today. Lobby to change the way the 4 big counties get their top election official. instead of the Secretary of State appointing that position - change to have it elected by the local voters.[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Elections - I have been working to make elections better for 15 years. I approach that work from a third party, outsider point of view.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Rob Hodgkinson answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

From a secretary of state perspective - Matthew Dunlap of Maine. He is working against the establishment to make voting better. I intend to do the same.[4]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
I would recommend going to the Advocates for self government website - they have many books that can help you understand libertarian thought and philosophy.[4]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Integrity, openness and fairness to all.[4]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
Three areas;

my IT/IS background as computers are becoming a factor in elections. my small business background, I helped triple the size of a remodeling business from 2008 - 2013 *the recession time frame. my election experience - I have been working on making elections better for years.[4]

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Two areas are the main responsibility of the secretary of state in Kansas; elections and record keeping (business filings and election records)[4]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I am known as a dog and kid magnet. I have always had dogs (rescues) and dogs & kids have always liked and trusted me immediately/instinctively.[4]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
Space exploration - the trials and successes. reaching the moon. 8 to 10 yrs old then.[4]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
first job was at a small golf course / driving range / mini golf.[4]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
none - not much into holidays[4]
What is your favorite book? Why?
Tolkien - the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.[4]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Gandalf[4]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
The 2 acres of land around it. I love to garden and have multiple flower gardens, a large vegetable garden and open space to let the dogs run and explore.[4]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Wham - Careless whisper[4]
What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the state government?
elections - we must vote so that our elected officials know our thoughts and they then can be responsive to that.[4]
What responsibilities of this office do you personally consider the most important?
elections - we have to know that our elections are fair, secure and accurate.[4]
Are there any little-known powers or responsibilities held by this office that you believe more people should be aware of?
business filings record keeping - is the not known well aspect of the office responsibilties.[4]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?
yes. the processes of getting laws changed can be cumbersome and tough to understand for a ""newbe"" in this office.[4]
What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?
the three skills I mention earlier that i possess, IT/IS experience, business experience and elections experience.[4]
