I retired last October from the Air Force after 22 years serving as an Airborne Korean Linguist and Squadron Superintendent. I directed management, funding, and resources for over 10,000 personnel while serving in the Air Force. It taught me to lead with integrity and to have a servant leadership mentality. I received a Bachelor's Degree from Grace University in Christian Ministry plus 3 Associate's Degrees earned while serving in the Air Force. I volunteer on my church's security team and have been a high school and college football official in the Omaha and surrounding area for over 15 years. The state school board has one of the most important responsibilities, overseeing the education of our youth. We could not afford to send our kids to private school while stationed in Baltimore due to high taxes and my children languished in the public school system. I'm not going to sit by and watch that happen here in Nebraska. Rigorous academic standards, policies that support achievement at all levels from pre K-12 to college, and proper stewardship of money and your tax dollars are important to me and will be the bedrock of my position on the board.
  • Students are my priority. Their safety, treatment, and academic achievement are essential to me.
  • I am the only Conservative candidate running for the State Board.
  • No more social re-engineering, I will fight for high academic standards with a renewed focus on the trades.
Fiscal responsibility from all levels of state and federal government. We do not have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem. Taxes are at an all time high in our cities and counties, we must find ways to stop this tax growth while providing quality education.
I have had numerous mentors in my life and some are still present. I look up to each one for different reasons. My pastor helps guide my spiritual walk while two other mentors I confide in for advice along the way. All three men exemplify true servant leadership. Because I grew up without a father most of my life, my real father moved back to Puerto Rico when I was only 4, I have never shied away from seeking advice and guidance from others. While in the Air Force, I had leaders that exemplified our three core values, Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do. That is the reason those are the core values of my campaign.
Integrity is the most important characteristic of an elected official. To be true to others and to be true to yourself is key to being a good leader and an elected official. While serving in the Air Force, honest leaders and followers were the backbone of a successful organization and successful missions. It is important to be honest in the face of adversity.
One of a hard worker, one of compassionate follower and leader, and one to slow to anger but quick to forgiveness. My children are a part of my legacy. My children to continue to be loving and caring members of our community. My son, Robert Jr., is carrying the torch of service to his country by serving in the Air Force Reserve. My three wonderful children and three foster children are my legacy. They continue to grow and mature everyday.
The Space Shuttle Challenger tragedy was the first historical event that I remember. It was January 28, 1986 and I was 9 years old. It was a very sad day at school.
My first job was working at a tree farm during Christmas season. I would cut trees down for families and wrap them for transport. It was a very rewarding job and taught me about hard work and earning a solid day's pay. I was 14 at the time.
I think having a wide variety of experience is beneficial for any organization. If someone has served in government or politics too long, they may become disconnected from the reality of being an everyday citizen. Furthermore, group think is a byproduct of having a lack of organizational diversity. It often discourages innovation and personal responsibility. Socioeconomic status and work experience are types of diversity that would benefit office holders.
