Blaha ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House to represent Colorado's 5th District. He was defeated by incumbent Doug Lamborn in the Republican primary on June 26, 2012.[5]

According to Politico, Blaha posed a serious primary threat to incumbent Lamborn. Well-funded Blaha spent more than double the amount Lamborn did, and cast Lamborn as a career politician. Lamborn fought back, questioning Blaha's conservative credentials on gun control.[6][7]

Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Blaha's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Healthcare: Obamacare makes healthcare less affordable, deductibles higher, and puts the Federal Government between you and your doctor. Robert supports a repeal and replace approach to this misguided law with two words: Patient Empowerment.
  • Taxes: Robert Blaha supports a complete overhaul of tax code which not only burdens the economy, but also the American people. The current tax system is riddled with special interest loopholes, endless deductions, and complexities, and as a result, most Americans need to hire an accountant, and even an attorney, to pay their taxes.
  • Immigration: Robert Blaha is the first candidate for federal office to voluntarily hold himself accountable for fixing illegal immigration. If he can’t help achieve a 50% drop-off rate in illegal immigration to the United States, he will leave Washington at the end of his first term.
  • Fiscal Restraint: One of the biggest threats to our nation is an ocean of debt. It not only threatens our future, but that of our children and grandchildren.
  • Term Limits: Politics was never meant to be a career. It was meant to be a limited service one performed out of gratitude for this country. Instead, what we have today is a permanent political class obsessed with their own incumbency. What we have is an incestuous relationship between Big Government and Big Business that threatens the very core of our Republic and breeds cynicism in our citizens. They think the game is rigged, and they are right on the money.

2012

Blaha's campaign website listed the following issues:[9]

  • Gun Rights
Excerpt: "The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution – “The right of people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” – is crucial to defend our freedoms. I will fight any measure that threatens to erode our Second Amendment rights."
  • Defense
Excerpt: "Providing for the common defense is perhaps the most important duty of the Federal Government. We must maintain a strong defense at all costs and remain vigilant as the world continues to be a dangerous and confusing place."
  • Energy Independence
Excerpt: "We must have a policy that moves America toward energy independence and away from foreign oil addiction. I support a multi-faceted policy to develop energy resources in the United States – utilizing solar, wind and hydropower, as well as biofuels, nuclear, coal, and natural gas and oil."
  • Federal Reserve
Excerpt: "Although a central banking system makes sense for America and has from time-to-time historically worked well, the Federal Reserve is out of control. Printing money, making short-term decisions and not having the ability to look beyond the immediate has accelerated the financial meltdown in the United States."
  • Healthcare
Excerpt: "Our healthcare system is in dire need of reform, but The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is a prescription for disaster. ObamaCare is at best bad law, at worst potentially unconstitutional – and definitely unconscionable."
