Robert Byrne

Robert E. Byrne is a former justice of the Illinois Second District Appellate Court.

Education

Judge Byrne was born July 10, 1941, in Oak Park. He is a graduate of St. Ignatius High School and Loyola University of Chicago receiving his Juris Doctor in 1967.

Career

He practiced as a litigation attorney in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties prior to his appointment as an Associate Judge in the 18th Judicial Circuit in 1986. He was appointed a circuit judge in 1991 and elected as such in 1992. He served as Presiding Judge of the Domestic Relations Division (1992-96) and the Chancery Division (1996-2001). He also served in the Probate Court, Field (Traffic) Court, Juvenile Court, Small Claims, Arbitration and Law Jury sections of the 18th Circuit.[1]

Memberships and associations

Judge Byrne is the founder of the Arbitration Program in DuPage County as well as the Court Friends-Guardian Monitor Program for disabled adults. He served on the Judicial Conference Committee on ADR from 1990 to 2000 and as Chair from 1997-2000. He has served on the Judicial Conference Court Automation Committee. He has been a member of the Illinois Judicial Conference since 1997. He has lectured and written extensively on mediation and arbitration in the United States and Europe. He has been a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and DuPage County Bar Associations. He has been active in his parish, St. Petronille of Glen Ellyn and Catholic Charities in the Joliet Diocese serving as President of the Corporate Board of Directors from 1998-2000.
