Robert B. Collings is a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. He has served in this position since March 15, 1982. His current term expired on March 14, 2022.[1] He served as chief magistrate from 1999 to 2001.[2]

Education

Collings was born in 1942 in New York City. He received his A.B. degree from Hamilton College in 1964 and his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1967.[1] He served in the U.S. Navy's Judge Advocate General's Corps after law school.[2]

Professional career

Judge Collings worked for the U.S. Attorney's Office from 1971 until he was appointed Magistrate Judge in 1982. He became Chief of the Criminal Division in 1976 and First Assistant U.S. Attorney in 1978. He has lectured at various schools and seminars. In 2007, he was appointed the Magistrate Judge representative to the Judicial Conference of the United States for two years.[2]
