Candidate Connection

Robert D'Arcy completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by D'Arcy's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Lower tax rate. Less government regulation. Work to end Obamacare.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Less government intrusion/regulation. Keeping taxes low. States Rights. Job creation and wage growth, and a strong economy. Safety of our people and enforcement of immigration laws.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Ronald Reagan, whose low tax and less regulation caused the economic boom of the 80's. George Washington, who risked his fortune and life to promote a country run by the people and for the people. Abraham Lincoln whose vision and perseverance maintained the union and helped to further advance our nation's credo that all men are created equal. Our current President Donald Trump, who is working for all Americans to make our lives better despite facing bias in the media and news organizations. He should get credit for renegotiating bad trade deals, for policies that are giving us a strong and robust economy, and for working to secure our borders and keeping American citizens safe.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

I would recommend reading books on our countries history, as our founding fathers were very wise men who had great vision, foresight, and perseverance.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty, integrity, and a love for America, and the principals for which our country stands. We should also show respect for and uphold the principals found in our constitution and the Bill of Rights.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Caring for America, and Americans. Our government should be making laws that make American lives easier, and more free and prosperous.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Having the best interest of the people at heart. Providing opportunity for individuals to improve their station in life.

What legacy would you like to leave?

That I worked to make American lives better

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The first historical event I remember was the gas shortage during the Carter years, and the recession at that time that impacted our families life. I was about 8 years old then.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Delivering newspapers. I was 7.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Christmas

What is your favorite book? Why?

The Bible

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Why be a fictional character. Real life is more interesting than fiction.

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

Paintings I've painted

Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?

Both chambers are working on the issues to solve the problems of our residents.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

I believe our government should be representational of its people. There should be people from all walks of life, and career choices/backgrounds.

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

Keeping taxes low. Promoting wage growth. Providing affordable higher education.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?

Putting forth bills that will promote a better quality of life for our citizens that both can agree on.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Yes, talking about issues with other legislators is helpful in finding solutions to those problems.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

This is a complicated issue and needs further study to find amicable solutions for both parties.

If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

House Budget Committee.

If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?

If there was a need for me.

Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?

There are many legislators who have done a great job in our state that I like.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

Possibly.

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

I think we should try to find ways to make college education affordable for our citizens.
