Robert E. Davis was Chief Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court in 2009. He was first appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993 by Governor Finney.[1]
In August 3, 2010, Davis retired from the court, effective immediately. One day after retiring from the court, Justice Davis passed away.[2][3]
Health concerns
Davis temporarily left office in early 2010 due to unspecified medical concerns. Justice Lawton Nuss served as the court's chief justice during his absence and assumed the position full-time upon Justice Davis's retirement.[4] John E. Sanders, chief judge of the 13th Judicial District also joined the court on a temporary basis. He heard appeals on March 12, 2010.[5]
Education
Davis received his bachelor's degree from Creighton University in 1961 and received his law degree from Georgetown University Law School in 1964.[1]
Professional career
Davis worked as a private practice lawyer in Leavenworth from 1967 to 1984. During this time, he served as a Leavenworth County magistrate judge (1969-1976), an attorney for the State Board of Pharmacy (1972-1984), and a Leavenworth County attorney (1981-1984). He was then appointed associate district judge. After two years in this position, he was appointed to the Kansas Court of Appeals in 1986. He judged on that court until his appointment to the Supreme Court in 1993.[1]
