An effort to recall Robert Dean, a member of the Democratic Party, from his elected position representing District 75 in the Michigan House of Representatives was launched in January 2008. The recall was abandoned on April 17, 2008.[1]
Dean was targeted by the group Taxpayers to Recall State Representative Robert Dean for voting in favor of HB 5194 (income tax increase) and HB 5198 (the service tax).

The group needed to gather 8,714 signatures in order to place the recall on the August 5th, 2008, ballot. The committee hired college students living in the district to collect signatures. Out-of-district volunteers helped them, despite being barred from collecting the signatures. The group abandoned its recall effort on April 16, 2008.[1]
Lawsuit
A lawsuit, Ebbers v. Secretary of State, was filed challenging the recall law that bars those from outside Dean's district from collecting signatures. The lawsuit was filed in Kent County Circuit Court and claimed that the First Amendment is violated by the restriction of free political speech. A hearing was held on the lawsuit on February 5, 2008. The circuit court upheld the law.[1]
