Robert S. Hyatt
Robert S. Hyatt was a judge for the Second Judicial District Court in Colorado. He was appointed to this position in November of 1987. On March 5, 2010 Hyatt was appointed Chief Judge of the court.[1] He served as the chief judge until he retired on January 1, 2014.[2]
Education
Hyatt graduated from St. Louis University with a degree in English. He worked as a television news reporter and anchorman prior to his legal career. He received his law degree from the University of Missouri in 1977.[2]
Career
Hyatt began his legal career as a private practice attorney. He also served in the Colorado Attorney General's Office. In May of 1984, he joined the Denver County Court bench. He was promoted to the 2nd District Court in 1987.[2]
Noteworthy cases
Judge allows recall election to proceed
On July 18, 2013, Judge Hyatt approved the first-ever legislative recall election, rejecting a lawsuit intended to stop the recall. A date of September 10, 2013 has been set for the recall election of Democratic Senators John Morse and Angela Giron. The opposition to the two senators stems from their votes in favor of three gun-control bills.[3] In his ruling, Hyatt stated:
| “ | The court specifically finds that the recall process involves fundamental rights of a republican form of government which the people have reserved onto themselves… And any such law ‘must be liberally construed in favor of the right of the people to exercise that...'[4][5] | ” |
