|- • Keep water rates low and continue to provide clean, safe, and sustainable groundwater;
- • Cleanup 60 billion gallons of salty groundwater in the South Bay groundwater aquifer by tripling the capacity of our brackish water desalting plant in Torrance to supply an additional 12 million gallons a day of locally sustainable fresh water;
- • Fight the effects of Climate Change on our imported water supply by Partnering with neighboring water districts to purify 300 million gallons a day of reclaimed wastewater and stormwater for drinking water, completely eliminating the need for costly imported water;
The key to a sustainable, drought-proof water-future lies under our feet.

|Groundwater annually provides 80 billion gallons of water or half of the drinking water.
15 years ago, we recognized that climate change was having and adverse impact on the reliability of our imported water supply... Thus, we adopted our "Water Independence Now" or WIN program with the goals of keeping water rates low and becoming independent from increasingly unreliable and costly imported water from the Sacramento Delta for groundwater replenishment
Last year WRD completed construction of its Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility in Pico Rivera. This plant's purified water is put into the nearby County spreading grounds and was the last step to make our groundwater basins independent from imported water and 100% drought proof.
WRD is preparing plans to clean up 600,000 acre-feet of undrinkable salty brackish water that intruded into the West Basin before the West Coast Sea Water Barrier was built. This involves construction of a "inland" brackish groundwater desalting plant along Crenshaw Blvd. in Torrance that will supply 20 million gallons a day of locally sustainable fresh drinking water.- Continue keeping water rates low and our groundwater clean, safe and reliable protecting our families and future generations
- Cleanup 600,000 ac.-ft.of salty groundwater with a new desalting plant in Torrance to supply an additional 20 million gallons a day of locally sustainable fresh water to further reduce imported water from N. California.
- Partner with City of LA, MWD and LA County Sanitation District to purify 350 million gallons a day of tertiary treated sewage and stormwater to completely eliminate the need for imported N. Calif water.
Although we can't see them, the groundwater aquifers managed by WRD are a huge natural reservoir - containing over 200 billion gallons of unused storage space.
Nearly 16 years ago I was privileged to be elected to the Water Replenishment District (WRD) Board of Directors. I am proud to be part of the WRD team that insures safe and plentiful groundwater for 4 million people in southern Los Angeles County.
