Robert Kelleher
Robert Kelleher was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of California. He joined the court in 1970 after being nominated by President Richard Nixon. He assumed senior status on March 5, 1983 and served until his death on June 20, 2012. Kelleher was the longest serving federal judge in the nation at the time of his death.[1]
Early life and education
A native of New York State, Kelleher graduated from Williams College with his bachelor's degree in 1935 and later with his juris doctorate at Harvard Law School in 1938. Kelleher served two years in the US Navy as a reservist from 1943 to 1945.
Professional career
Kelleher began his legal career as a trial attorney for the U.S. Trucking Company based in New York City from 1939 to 1940 before moving to California to become associate attorney for the U.S. Department of the Army from 1941 to 1942. After military service, Kelleher resumed legal work as a private practice licensed in the State of California from 1945 to 1948. In 1948, Kelleher became joined theU.S. Attorney's Office as Assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of California from 1948 to 1951. Kelleher later became a resumed private practice work from 1951 till his appointment to the federal bench in 1971.
Judicial career

Kelleher was nominated by President Richard Nixon on December 15, 1970 to a new seat created by 84 Stat. 294 which was approved by Congress.[2] Kelleher was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 17, 1970 on a senate vote and received commission on December 21, 1970. Kelleher assumed senior status on March 5, 1983. He served until his death on June 20, 2012.
