Robert Kelly is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He joined the court in 1987 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. He is serving on senior status.

Early life and education

A native Pennsylvanian, Kelley graduated from Villanova University with his bachelor's degree in 1957 and later graduated from the Temple University School of Law with his Law degree in 1960.[1]

Professional career

From 1961 to 1976, Kelly became a private practice attorney licensed in the Pennsylvania. Also, Kelly was a Law Clerk for Common Pleas Judge Francis Catania in the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas from 1964 to 1972. From 1972 to 1976, Kelley was a Prothonotary of Delaware County and also served as the Chairman of the Delaware County Republican Executive Committee from 1972 to 1985. Before becoming a federal judge, Kelly was a Common Pleas Judge in the Court of Common Pleas of the 32nd Judicial District of Pennsylvania from 1976 to 1987.

Judicial career

Eastern District of Pennsylvania

On the recommendation of Pennsylvania U.S. Senators John Heinz III and Arlen Specter, Kelly was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on May 1, 1987 to a seat vacated by Donald VanArtsdalen as VanArtsdalen assumed senior status. Kelly was confirmed by the Senate on June 25, 1987, on a Senate vote and received commission on June 26. Kelly later assumed senior status on July 17, 2001. Kelly was succeeded in this position by Michael Baylson.
