Recall reports

An effort in Humboldt, Nebraska, to recall Mayor Robert Mendenhall was initiated in July 2020.[1][2] Recall organizers submitted enough signatures to put the recall on the ballot. The recall election was held on November 3, 2020, and Mendenhall retained his seat.[3][4]

Recall supporters

The recall effort was organized by resident Mary White in response to concerns over the city's financial standing. White also cited the firing of the former city clerk and a vote to consolidate the clerk and treasurer positions as reasons to recall Mendenhall.[1]

Recall opponents

In response to the recall effort, Mendenhall said, "The day I took office we basically had $70,000 worth of bills that were not paid and also payroll bounced, so that wasn’t a good first-day in office. We were trying to bring a little cash into the area, but most importantly I wanted to use some of these funds to be able to start cleaning up some of the areas that need to be cleaned up and, at the present time, we just don’t have the finances to be able to do that. I won the election quite significantly and I think I owe that to the community, to do the best job that I can. If I’m not doing a good enough job, I’m sorry. All I can do is the very best that I can."[2]
