Robert Mueller
Robert Swan Mueller III is the former special counsel who oversaw the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. He was the sixth director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), serving in the position from September 4, 2001, to September 4, 2013.
On May 17, 2017, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein named Mueller as the special counsel in charge of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Rosenstein said in a statement, "Based upon the unique circumstances, the public interest requires me to place this investigation under the authority of a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command. A special counsel is necessary in order for the American people to have full confidence in the outcome. Our nation is grounded on the rule of law, and the Public must be assured that government officials administer the law fairly."[1]
On May 29, 2019, Mueller resigned from the special counsel position and closed the special counsel office due to the conclusion of the investigation.[2]
Biography
Mueller was born in New York, New York, on August 7, 1944. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University in 1966 and a master’s degree in international relations from New York University in 1967.[3][4]
After college, Mueller joined the United States Marine Corps and served as an officer in the Vietnam War for three years. He earned a Bronze Star, two Navy Commendation Medals, the Purple Heart, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry for his service.[3][4]
After the war, he earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1973 and worked as a litigator. He then began working as an attorney.[3][4]
