Issues

2011 Education Reform

Nonini has supported Idaho Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Luna's K-12 education reform package. The first bill was sent to the governor on March 9, 2011. That bill will restrict collective bargaining rights for teachers to salaries and benefits only. Additionally, tenure would be phased out for new teachers and existing teachers without tenure. "Through this plan, we are going to attract and retain more quality teachers in Idaho by offering a two-year contract, increased pay and the opportunity to earn bonuses," Nonini said.[2]

I was born and raised in north Idaho. I have previously served 14 years in the Idaho Legislature. I am very conservative and my previous experience and voting record verifies that. My priorities are education, economic development and protecting and utilizing Idaho’s natural resources.
  • Education and my continued support of STEM as it educates young people as to the needs in today’s workforce.
  • Economic development and its use in education as it relates to STEM training.
  • We need to protect our natural resources and utilize them, i.e. protect out water and utilize our minerals and timber.
That I listened and worked hard.
Tuesdays with Maury because of the caring and relationship.
Going up the country by Canned Heat.
Education, Revenge and Taxation.
There should be adequate transparency and an accountability.

2014

Nonini's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[14]

Natural Resources

  • Excerpt: "I support natural resource based industry and will support legislation for these industries to remain a viable part of North Idaho’s economy."

Jobs and the Economy

  • Excerpt: "I support a positive business climate in Idaho and the continued recruitment of companies that pay good wages and offer good benefits."

Taxes

  • Excerpt: "Idaho’s revenue is based on a 3 legged stool; Corporate Income Tax, Personal Income Tax and Sales Tax. I will work for fiscal responsibility in government and fight hard against any proposals to raise these taxes."

Lake Coeur d’Alene and the Spokane River

  • Excerpt: "The EPA is a heavy-handed federal beauracracy attempting to dictate to the residents of North Idaho their will to expand the superfund site to include the entire Coeur d’Alene Basin. I will fight for local control as we know best here in North Idaho how to protect and manage one of our most valuable natural resources."

Education

  • Excerpt: "I believe that all methods should be treated fairly and equally by the legislature. Parents deserve the right to choose how they educate their children, and should not be penalized for choosing one method over another."

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Idaho

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
