Campaign themes

2017

Olson's campaign website included the following themes:

After practicing law as an attorney for 15 years I can say without reservation that our judicial system is wrought with judges that have prejudices, ignore the law, are lazy, pander to certain interests, are power hungry, are unethical, - and the list goes on and on - all the while being in a position where they have sworn to uphold the law. Now, do not get me wrong, there are good judges as well. In my experience, the good judges are honest and fair, they are not influenced by outside forces, they are respectful, they are compassionate, and above all, they follow the law.

With much forethought, I decided that the best way I could make an actual difference in our local judicial system (Washington County) was to become a judge. I promise that as a judge I will be fair, that I will be impartial, that I will be compassionate, that I will work diligently to understand the facts in the cases that come before me, that I will afford criminal defendant's all the rights to which they are entitled under the Constitution, that I will be free of outside influence or interests, and that I will follow the law. I will not default to the "word" of only local authorities; however, I will always show them the respect they deserve; I will not read into statutes meanings that do not exist; and I will require the necessary evidence.

Those that know me will attest that I am an easy-going guy. I enjoy having beers with family and friends, grilling, and getting my hands dirty working on welding projects and other tinkering projects around the house and in the garage, and of course, keeping up to date with technologies. And I do have a sense of humor, which often seems not to be the case with judges. I want to make a difference in the lives of the citizens of Washington County should they come under the unfortunate circumstances of having to appear before a judge. I want to restore faith in our legal system one case at a time.

If given the honor to serve as Washington County Circuit Court Judge, Branch 3, I will apply the law as written, and I will not make new laws that do not exist, nor will I legislate from the bench.[2][3]
